Born in Torino (Italy) in 1960. He was awarded the degree in Physics (Summa cum laude) at the University of Trieste in 1984 and the Ph.D. in Physics at the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) of Trieste in 1988. Subsequently, he was Post Doctoral Fellow at the Institute of Theoretical Physics of the University of Vienna (1989) and at the Institute for Advanced Studies of Dublin (1990) and Visiting Scientist at the Institute of Theoretical Physics of the University of Leuven (1998). In December 1990 he has become staff member of the Department of Theoretical Physics of the University of Trieste.
His research activity includes Open Quantum Systems, Quantum Information and Complexity in Classical and Quantum Systems.
He has published two books, co-edited 3 books and about 100 articles in international Journals and is referee for several Journals.
He has co-organized 4 among Schools and Workshops .
He collaborates with the Institutes for Theoretical Physics of the University of Vienna (prof. H. Narnhofer), of the Katholike Universitaet of Leuven (prof. M. Fannes) and of the University of Gdansk (prof. R. Alicki).
He has supervised 13 undergraduate students and 6 PhD students.
